The AFL Masters National Carnival is the flagship event on the AFL Masters calendar, bringing together players, officials, volunteers, families and supporters from across Australia for a celebration of football, friendship and community.

First held in 1983, the National Carnival has grown into one of the most anticipated events in the AFL Masters year. Hosted in a different state or territory each year, the Carnival provides participants with the opportunity to represent their state, compete against teams from around the country and create lifelong memories both on and off the field.

a rich history

The foundations of the National Carnival were established in 1983 with the introduction of an Over 45s representative age group. Since then, the event has continued to evolve, expanding to include a range of men’s and women’s divisions that allow players to continue enjoying Australian Football throughout their lives.

A significant milestone was reached in 2016 when women first joined the National Carnival through the introduction of an Over 30s division. An Over 40s women’s division followed in 2017, and the introduction of a Non-Contact (AFL 9’s stye) competition in 2024 further strengthened the Carnival’s commitment to providing inclusive playing opportunities for all participants.

Today’s Carnival includes men’s divisions from 35+ through to 65+, while women’s competitions now include 35+, 40+, 45+ and AFL 9’s divisions.

AFL Masters football includes several rule modifications designed to support safe, enjoyable and sustainable participation for players aged 35 and over.

These modifications recognise that players come from a wide range of ages, abilities and football backgrounds, while ensuring everyone can continue enjoying the game they love.

do i need to be selected to play?

No. All Vic Metro players that register to attend National Carnival are automatically selected to play in their correct age division.

can i attend if i’m not playing? 

Absolutely. Family members, supporters, volunteers and team officials are all encouraged to be part of the Carnival experience.

do i need to be selected to play? how many games will i play?

All teams play three matches across the Carnival.

what standard of football should i expect?

Teams are made up of AFL Masters player from across the country. The emphasis is on competitive football played in the AFL Masters spirit.

do i need to be currently registered with afl masters?

Players must meet the eligibility requirements set by their state or territory organisation. To join the Vic Metro team, you must play in the AFLVM League, however there are exceptions when states choose to join forces to enter a team.

what makes afl masters different?

AFL Masters football includes modified rules and behavioural expectations that prioritise safety, respect and enjoyment while maintaining the competitive spirit of the game.

is the carnival family-friendly?

Yes. Many participants travel with partners, families and supporters, making the National Carnival a true community event.

I’m a first time attendee, what do i need to know about costs?

All Vic Metro players must cover the cost of:

• Player Registration Entry (this includes match playing fees, Vic Metro team polo shirt, Vic Metro Event team night entry, National Gala Night entry)
• Playing kit (jumper, shorts, socks). Playing kits can be purchased once and used for several seasons after.
• Travel, flights & accommodation expenses
• Meals & spending money for the week

There is no registration fee for family, friends and team volunteers etc who are not playing in the matches. Additional tickets to Vic Metro events and the National Gala night are available for purchase.

where do i stay?

Those attending the carnival are responsible for booking their own accommodation. Where possible and if the location is suitable, Vic Metro may have a partnership with an accommodation provider for Vic Metro team to access exclusive rates.

If attendees want to stay elsewhere, you’re welcome to book a hotel, motel, Airbnb or Holiday park of your choice to suit your needs and travel companions.
