AFL Masters Victorian Metropolitan Football League

Please find below responses to some of the most commonly asked questions about getting to Perth for the 2021 SeaLink AFL Masters National Carnival:

What are the dates of the event, and where is the event?
– Dates for the 2021 Perth AFL Masters National Carnival are Sunday 26th September – Saturday 2nd October 2021. The carnival will be based at Langley Park, near the Perth CBD.

What is the flight frequency from the major cities to and from Perth? Does the Perth Organising Committee have any deals or refund policies with any airlines?
– The frequency of flights from major cities remains daily. Most airlines are currently offering full flight refunds via vouchers (to the end of 2023) and could be used for the next carnival. However, airline policies differ – therefore please check their terms and conditions on refunds or credits. The Perth Organising Committee have no specific arrangements with any of the airline providers for carnival participants.

What is the latest on the accommodation deals? Does the Perth Organising Committee have a refund policy in place with any accommodation providers?
– The current special accommodation deals previously provided to the States by the Perth Organising Committee are still in place, and some have offered further discounts. The POC accommodation providers all have COVID-19 policies which include full refunds.

Will I get a refund for my registration if I can’t make it to Perth?
– The National Carnival Registration Fee (including Presentation Night) is refundable. Each state will offer refunds, with the exception of ordered uniforms where production has started in some cases. Each state will advise of its refund policy, so please seek their guidance if a refund is required.

What do I need to do to travel to WA, or how do I know if I can? Is there a ‘trafficlight’ and permit system, where incoming travellers need to apply for a different kind of permit, based on the ‘trafficlight’ status of their region?
– Everyone who travels to WA will need to fill in a G2G Pass. The G2G Pass is available on the WA State Government website, or can be downloaded as an app. It’s very simple and easy to use. The app enables virtual check-ins during your quarantine once you have entered WA. The G2G Pass should be completed 72 hours or less prior to the flight of the individual or family (in the case of children). The specific requirements for what people need to do to get into WA varies, depending on the status of the state they are travelling from (i.e., very low risk, low risk, and medium risk). More details are provided below, or click here to see the latest information on the WA border restriction status for each state.

What if I am required to quarantine in WA when I get there? Will I have to pay for my own accommodation if I need to quarantine?
– If a state is in lockdown or there will be no entry into WA. Participants will pay for their own accommodation if they are required to quarantine.

Will AFL Masters players be eligible for any kind of exemption to get into WA if they are from a Low Risk or Medium Risk state?
– Players will NOT get an exemption if they are from a LOW or MEDIUM risk state.

What is the lockdown response of the WA government? How quickly do they go into lockdown, and what is the average lockdown duration? Are lockdowns usually state-wide or localised to a few common LGAs?
– The WA State Government usually takes between 6 to 8 hours prior to any lockdown commencing to provide the WA Police the opportunity to set up border control etc. The most recent lockdown resulted in Perth and the Peel Region ONLY being placed in lockdown for 3-4 days. This lockdown period has been the government approach since after the election and has resulted in opening soon after, so we don’t see them changing from this approach until the vaccination rate is at a point where they feel comfortable.

What is the border closure response of the WA government? How quickly do they shut the borders, and what is the average length of a border closure? Does the WA government close the border differently between different states? I.e., does it shut down the border with NSW quicker than let’s say SA if there is an outbreak in those states?
– The WA State Government once the border is closed to another State rely on 14 days of ZERO cases prior to opening the WA border. This has been a consistent approach by the government in since early 2021.The border arrangements differ for each State based on their current COVID issues/numbers. The status of each state changes depending on the number of active cases in that state.

What are the feasible alternate locations I could base myself in WA outside of Perth before the carnival? I.e., should I go to Margaret River for two weeks before going to Perth because it doesn’t go into lockdown very often? Would Fremantle be a viable alternative?
– If you decide to stay outside the Perth/Peel regions and it goes into lockdown you WON’T get into either region. Fremantle is considered part of the Perth Region.

What if a number of states are unable to attend? Will the National Carnival be cancelled?
– There are more than 400 players from WA and more than 850 players in total registered for the carnival, so the 2021 AFL Masters National Carnival will be going ahead, and has the potential to be the biggest AFL Masters National Carnival ever in terms of the number of players and teams involved. If any states are missing players (due to COVID) or there are insufficient numbers in a particular interstate team or age group, then WA players will top up team numbers. We will make sure everyone gets a game and enjoys the carnival.
